The Build of The George

A new chapter on Elizabeth Street

Set in one of Launceston’s most iconic precincts, The George Hotel brings modern accommodation to a site rich with history.

Sharing its footprint with the long-standing Colonial Hotel Launceston and Three Steps on George Bar & Restaurant, The George was designed with purpose: to introduce elegant, space-savvy stays without disrupting the character of its surrounds.

The project was a bold undertaking, one that carefully balanced heritage, progress, and community.

Reimagining heritage for the modern traveller

Completed in 2025, The George Hotel delivers 38 contemporary guest rooms, tucked behind the familiar façade of Launceston’s Georgian streetscape. While the build sparked community conversation around style and scale, key design amendments ensured the final vision paid respect to the past, with muted tones, integrated materials and retained streetside charm.

A Respectful Evolution

This development represents the first construction on the site since 1806 - a significant moment in Launceston’s architectural evolution. The final result reflects collaboration, care and commitment to both modern needs and local identity.

The George Hotel now stands as a thoughtful extension of The Colonial, offering guests the best of both worlds. Modern comfort, heritage charm, and a location that truly connects you to the soul of Launceston.
